Threshold of parametric decay instability accompanying electron Bernstein wave heating in spherical tokamaks

چکیده
Abstract. The parametric instability of upper hybrid wave decay into back scattered upper hybrid wave and lower hybrid wave is considered for conditions of inhomogeneous plasma of spherical tokamaks. The possibility of absolute instability is demonstrated and the corresponding threshold is determined. It is shown that the threshold power increases with pump frequency and electron temperature. Threshold power is estimated for typical parameters of experiment in MAST tokamak. It is shown that in this case parametrical reflection arises, if probing power exceeds 90 W/cm, which gives 30 kW for a beam of 10 cm radius.

Parametric Decay Instability During High Harmonic Fast Wave Heating Experiments on the TST-2 Spherical Tokamak
A degradation of heating efficiency was observed during high-harmonic fast wave (HHFW) heating of spherical tokamak plasmas when parametric decay instability (PDI) occurred. Suppression of PDI is necessary to make HHFW a reliable heating and current drive tool in high β plasmas. In order to understand PDI, measurements were made using a radially movable electrostatic probe (ion saturation curre...

Self-consistent and accurate modeling of wave-plasma interactions is one of the key issues in producing and sustaining burning plasmas. We have upgraded our full wave component of the integrated modeling code TASK, taking account of the finite gyroradius effects indispensable for correctly describing the absorption of ICRF waves by energetic ions and the behavior of electron Bernstein waves. The AMR (Antenna—Mode-conversion—Ray-tracing) code [1, 2] has been recently coupled with the LUKE [3] Fokker-Planck code. This modeling suite is capable of complex simulations of electron Bernstein wave (EBW) emission, heating and current drive. We employ these codes to study EBW heating and current drive performance under spherical tokamak (ST) configurations—typical NSTX discharges are employ...
